By communicating through a visual language based on images taken from her memories and dreams Catalina Viejo Lopez de Roda examines the ambiguities present in self-perception and human relationships. The women in her paintings are strong yet vulnerable; they are physically together yet mentally alone. Spaces overlap and bodies meld to create visual metaphors. Viejo Lopez de Roda thinks of her paintings not as images of a static moment but as an evolving series of events. Her paintings open to reveal psychological and experiential depths that both invite and defy the viewer to become an element of the work.

Her 2015 solo exhibition “a view of the end” at SHAG, Brooklyn, NY was covered internationally by various publications including the New York Post, The Daily Mail of London, El Universal of Mexico, and Vanity Fair Italia. The exhibition was accompanied by a book which included an interview with renowned art historian Joachim Pissarro and opinions from art writers, critics and curators including Robert Storr (artist, critic and former dean of Yale University), Claire Gilman (senior curator at The Drawing Center, NY), and Wendy Vogel (writer and online editor of Art in America).

Viejo Lopez de Roda also participated in the exhibition Wide Open 6 in BWAC, Brooklyn, NY in which she was awarded Best in Show Gold by Rujeko Hockley, Curator at the Brooklyn Art Museum.

Most recently in 2016 Viejo Lopez de Roda has participated in “Double Visions” curated by Craig Bloodgood at the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, MA and is currently participating in the exhibition “Representing Rainbows” in GP Presents, New York, NY, curated by Lisa Corinne Davis. Her work is represented in many private collections including the collections of Guy Wildenstein, NY and Ethan Cohen, NY.

Born in Malaga, Spain, Catalina Viejo Lopez de Roda currently lives and works in Hudson, New York. She holds a BFA from Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts (2005) and an MFA from Hunter College in New York City (2014).
